We recently uncovered a small hoard of 1983 Gold Ten Yuan China Pandas!
Most of these coins were thought to be nearly extinct. They are only the 2nd year of issue for the Chinese Panda gold coins! Back in the 1980’s most of these coins were destroyed of any collector value from their use in jewelry.
This hoard was brought to our attention by the executor of his grandfather’s estate. He is familiar with the owner of our company and knew how much we love Chinese coins. This grandfather was a local merchant in San Francisco’s famous Chinatown, with family roots going back over a century, before the great earthquake and fire of 1906. Their ancestors date as far back to being laborers on the first railroad tracks built in California. The current family business was passed down to him by his ancestor’s decades earlier. The Grandfather being the patriarch of the family had collected coins for years. He was also an avid collector of fine Chinese art and antiquities. Apparently, this man had caught the Panda Coin fever starting in 1982. As It turns out, the gentleman had bought, sold and traded his coins and collectibles for many years. We were fortunate that we were able to purchase the surviving hoard. The coins were discovered many years after the cherished grandfather’s passing, and were found in his old desk that had been stored for decades, alongside the antique abacus he used to figure out the accounting books for the family business. We decided to split the collection and sell one type at a time.
Today’s offering is very limited and sold on a strictly first come first serve basis.
A brief history of the Gold Panda coins: The China Panda Gold coins were first introduced in 1982. The design was so beautiful these coins became an instant hit all over the world. During the 1970’s and 1980’s many gold coins were used for jewelry and, the cute little Panda Bear fit in just perfectly, especially with women. These coins made the perfect gift for your girlfriend, spouse, daughter or mother and the varied sizes made them affordable for any income level.
An unexpected event gave the gold Panda series the biggest value boost in history: Because of “the apartheid” unjust action in South Africa, the world’s most popular gold bullion, the Krugerrand, hit below ground in the public eye. In fact, the U.S. government suspended any new importation of the Krugerrand on October 2nd 1985. This legal action imposed by President Reagan caused the China gold Panda coins to take off like a rocket.
Also, the Panda stands alone because China decided to change the designs of their Panda coins every year. The very first bullion based coin to become highly collectible and they have become more popular year after year. Back in the 1980’s the Panda coins were just thought of as only another bullion coin like the Krugerrand, Mapleleaf or the U.S. Eagle, so saving them in perfect condition was not a priority.
Now, 35 years later, the Panda coins are one of the strongest, most popular collector coins in the entire world. They are not only beautiful but the varied designs, popularity and demand with the host country has been phenomenal. However, the unintentional destruction of the early year Panda coins have created huge rarities in the nicest of Gem grades.
